CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger 2018 Shortlist
Continuing our run of interviews with the shortlisted CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger authors, we turn our attention to C. J. Tudor. This week her thriller The Chalk Man is in the spotlight.
How does it feel to be on the shortlist for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger?
Bonkers. Amazing. Incredible. Like someone has made a terrible mistake! I mean, have you seen the other names on the shortlist? I feel like a drunken gate crasher at a far cooler party! In short, it’s a HUGE honour!
If you could summarise Chalk Man in ten words, what would you say?
Creepy. Twisty. Nostalgic. For fans of King, the 80s, chalk.
What’s your writing process – do you jump straight in, or plan and plot first?
Straight in. Then paddle madly to the 30,000 words mark before I go back and try to make sense of the mess I’ve written. Repeat for the next 30,000 words and so on!
Which thriller writers do you most admire?
Stephen King, Harlan Coben, Michael Marshall, Denis Lehane and Sarah Pinborough to name but a few!
What makes a killer thriller?
That ‘Oh my God’ moment that makes your scalp tingle and you want to share with every other reader but can’t or it would ruin the book for them.
The winner of the 2018 CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger will be announced on 25th October. The other shortlisted authors are Mick Herron, Attica Locke, Don Winslow, Emily Koch and Colette McBeth. Look out for the next instalment from the shortlisted authors next week.
