Interests
All Ian Fleming's interests have been memorably written about in his James Bond novels. Here are a few examples:
Travel - in every book except Moonraker
Jamaica in particular - Live and Let Die, Thunderball,
Cars - Bond loved his Bentley convertible. Ian's own most glamorous car was a
Thunderbird. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based on a real car.
Golf - his favourite course, the Royal St George's Club at Sandwich, Kent, is thinly disguised as the Royal St Mark's in Goldfinger, where James Bond and Goldfinger have their famous contest.
Skiing and the Alps - see On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Bridge - Sir Hugo Drax plays a legendary game against James Bond at Blades Club in Moonraker.
Gambling - at the tables in casinos, such as at Le Touquet. Casino Royale was where it all began.
Women - see all the books. The Spy Who Loved Me is an exception in that the book is written in the first person by Vivienne Michel. She says of James Bond - "He was only some kind of a spy, a spy who had loved me."
Names - his genius for naming characters, many of which have now entered the English lexicon shows his love for words. It is little known that he was responsible for the name Napoleon Solo in the television series The Man From Uncle
Book collecting - Though this does not feature in Fleming’s novels, this was an early passion of his. In the 1930s and 50s he gradually built up a distinguished and original collection of first editions of books that represented 'milestones in human progress'. This important collection, which was ahead of its time, now resides in the Lilly Library in Indiana.
Eggs - Fleming was not the gourmet that people assume. His favourite dish was scrambled eggs, which James Bond is often found to be eating!
