The Books

Did You Know?

  • The song 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was nominated for an oscar in 1968
  • Desmond Llewelyn, who played Q in the Bond films, played the scrap-dealer Coggins; and Gert Frobe (Goldfinger) was Baron Bomberst in the film
  • Empire magazine recently rated the film's child-catcher scenes amongst the 100 most frightening ever filmed
  • Gangsters in the story include Joe the Monster, Soapy Sam (Soap being the slang word for gelignite), Man Mountain Fink and Blood-Money Banks, the blackmailer
  • When the Potts blew up the villains' hoard of guns and explosives, they merely referred to is as a 'Bit of a Pop'
  • The Bon Bon Fooj fudge recipe at the end of the book is delicious. It was tested and slightly changed by Ian Fleming's secretary and editors, as Trog said it wouldn't work as Ian wrote it!
  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based on a real racing car owned by Count Zborowski.
