Chitty at Mottisfont: Celebrating 60 Years!

This summer take to the skies and explore the history and art of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Mottisfont, the National Trust-run former Hampshire home of Maud Russell, contemporary and friend of Ian Fleming.

Set amongst ancient trees, babbling brooks and rolling lawns, Mottisfont is an 18th-century house with a medieval priory at its heart. Running over the summer through to 2nd November, the new exhibition celebrates 60 years of Ian Fleming’s classic children’s adventure. See over 80 original illustrations, including, for the very first time, the complete set by legendary artist John Burningham, as well as vibrant new artwork by Steve Antony and Thomas Gilbert. This immersive, family-friendly exhibition features playful displays where Chitty ‘flies’ across the walls, a selfie station, and even an outdoor trail inspired by the book’s most unforgettable characters.

Older fans can dive into the remarkable story behind the story and explore Ian Fleming’s writing process, as well as the real-life inspiration behind the fabulous flying car. Fleming was a frequent guest at Mottisfont, and visitors can follow in his footsteps through the beautiful house and grounds, whilst learning about Maud Russell’s impact on his life and career.

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang trail will finish on 7th September, but the exhibition in the house will continue until 2nd November. Find out more about the exhibition and plan your visit here.
